BRASSAVOLA NODOSA
an orchid which endures

We have a certain view on how orchids live. That is, some people think about dark humid rain- and cloud-forest, others about open meadows, others about open savannah like mountainous woods. But almost no-one ever thinks about rocks in the splash-zone of the ocean.
Still, there is one orchid that can be found in all these habitats. Indeed Brassavola nodosa.
Oh well, to find it in a cloud-forest, you'll have to look. In that habitat lots of other epiphytes are competing for space and Brassavola is rare. But on sunny boulders in the splash-zone of the Costa Rican coasts they are abundant, presumably due to lack of competition. Whatever, the white starry flowers look great in any surrounding.

But what about growing in vivaria?

Should they be splashed with salty water?  No of course not. The main argument for them to grow on those places is the lack of competition, not the favourable conditions. They rather have clean rainwater and a wooden or fern root base and decent light and ventilation.

If light is sufficient, they do well almost everywhere in vivaria. That is, in the upper most regions of most close to the lamps. The plants need to dry out once a day and prefer to have a dryer month or two sometime when it's cooler, but otherwise do well. The main problem in vivaria is too much humidity, including a lack of drought during the day, resulting in roots covered and invaded by algae. But if the roots are allowed to dry properly they grow well and will flower.

I have heard from several people that they flower indeed, but the flowers are up to high and hardly visible if you have to look up into the lamps to see them. Well, the flowers grow between the leaves so you can place the plant in such a way you can have a decent view on them. Or you could choose another species namely Brassavola cuculata, which has hanging flowers.
